Understanding Wheel Bolt Patterns
A bolt pattern is described as number of bolts × PCD in millimeters (e.g., 5x114.3). Both must match for a wheel to fit your vehicle.
Never force a wheel with the wrong bolt pattern. Even a 1mm difference in PCD means the wheel is not properly centered and can vibrate or loosen.
Bolt pattern (PCD — Pitch Circle Diameter) specifies the number of lug bolts and the diameter of the circle they sit on. A "5x114.3" pattern has 5 bolts on a 114.3mm circle. To measure yourself on a 5-lug wheel: measure the distance between two non-adjacent (skip-one) bolts center-to-center and multiply by 1.051. For 4-lug wheels, measure directly across from one bolt center to the opposite bolt center.
Common bolt patterns by vehicle type: 5×114.3 (most Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford Mustang), 5×120 (BMW, Cadillac, most modern GM), 5×112 (Audi, Mercedes, VW), 5×130 (Porsche), 6×139.7 (Toyota Tacoma/4Runner, GM trucks). Bolt pattern is non-negotiable — wheels must match exactly or require hub adapters.
Hub bore (center bore) must also match. A wheel with a 73.1mm hub bore on a vehicle with a 67.1mm hub will need hub-centric rings for proper centering. Without rings, the wheel centers on the lug bolts instead of the hub, causing vibration at highway speeds. Lug-centric fitting is generally considered less safe and less accurate for high-speed use.
Lug thread pitch: the thread pitch of lug bolts/nuts must match between the wheel and vehicle. Most Honda applications use 12×1.5mm; BMW uses 14×1.25mm. Using mismatched lug hardware risks cross-threading or improper torque — always verify thread size before installation.
